This one was so much fun. I got to write the full history and full rainbow of Hulks.

I also got to talk to Hulk writer Al Ewing, whose 50-issue run of The Immortal Hulk (2018-2021) helped revitalize the character and solidify why the Hulk remains so compelling.

“There’s that extreme relatability right at the core of him,” Ewing told me. “Everybody on the planet knows what it’s like to be angry. Everybody has had that experience of not being in control.”

And yet, Ewing says, around that core is artistic freedom. Writers any kind of story through the Hulk.

“The essential chaos of the character, you cannot control him,” Ewing said, adding: “His entire psychology is summed up in two words.”

Those two words?

“HULK SMASH!”
