Carol Danvers—the modern-day Captain Marvel—has had more costume changes than Lady Gaga and more identities than Sean Combs. But that’s part of her appeal: Danvers has changed with the times and persevered to become one of the Marvel Universe’s heavy-hitters, a cosmic power so tough that she’s punched out both a Tyrannosaurus Rex and Thanos. She’s also an established commander, having led the Mighty Avengers and Alpha Flight, not to mention her own insurrection against Iron Man during Civil War II.

But it’s Danvers herself, whether she goes by the name Captain Marvel, Binary, Warbird or Ms. Marvel, who remains one of the most compelling characters in the Marvel canon. Her long history of breaking both jaws and hearts, winning battles and minds, makes her history even more impressive.
